Career Counseling
Career counseling is the developmental process of learning about yourself and how your interests, values, and strengths can match with career fields and specific employers. We start the process with a comprehensive one-hour “get to know you” session where you share your past history, discuss challenges and successes, and share goals with your counselor. Your counselor will then work with you to help you learn more about yourself, career options, and pathways to achieving your goals.
Specifically, we focus on the following:
- Self assessment of interests, values, skills, personality attributes, and career readiness
- Exploration of career options and how they play into your overall goals for life
- Review of educational and training programs to help enhance your skills and employability
- Discussion of past successes, challenges, and pitfalls to put you in the best position to move forward
- Support in learning about new career options through job shadowing, interviews, personal networking, and research
In addition, career counselors can also help with:
- Navigating workplace issues (problems with a boss, feeling bored and unchallenged, challenges with workplace culture, etc.)
- Preparing to take on a promotion and coaching for a successful transition
- Transitioning from being a full-time student to an full-time employee
- Coping with the loss of a job (layoff, downsized, fired, etc.)
- Dealing with personal issues that may be impacting job performance (divorce, death of a family member, etc.)
